El Paso Move Guide

PCSing to Fort Bliss? Here's your head start.

Orders to Bliss come with a sponsor packet. It won't tell you which gate to live near, where BAH actually stretches, or whether buying beats renting on a three-year tour. This will.

El Paso surprises almost everyone — in a good way

Most people arrive with zero expectations and leave calling it the best-kept secret in the Army. Roughly 300 days of sun a year, some of the lowest big-city housing costs in America, legendary Mexican food, and a commute measured in minutes, not hours. Your BAH goes further here than at almost any major post.

Neighborhoods, by gate and commute

Northeast El Paso

Closest to the main cantonment. Shortest commutes, established neighborhoods, and the most house per dollar in the city. Great if you want gate proximity above all.

East Side & Loop 375 corridor

The sweet spot for many families — newer construction, big-box shopping and restaurants, quick access to the Spur toward Biggs and East Bliss. The most popular landing zone for incoming soldiers with families.

Far East & Horizon City

Newest builds and the most square footage for the money. The trade: a longer drive, growing infrastructure. Popular with buyers who want new-construction everything on a BAH budget.

West Side & Upper Valley

Mountain views, mature trees near the Rio Grande, closer to UTEP and downtown. Longest commute to post — usually the pick for dual-career households working on the west side.

School districts change block to block. El Paso is served by several districts (EPISD, Ysleta, Socorro, Canutillo, Clint, and more), and two houses on the same street can feed different schools. Tell us what matters — programs, sports, special education — and we'll map it before you commit to a neighborhood.

BAH math: rent or buy on a three-year tour?

Look up your current rate on the official DoD BAH calculator, then run this simple test: in El Paso, monthly payments on a mid-priced home with a VA loan (zero down) often come in at or under BAH for mid-grade enlisted and above. That's rare among major installations.

  • Renting makes sense for short tours, uncertain follow-ons, or if you'd rather not landlord after you PCS out.
  • Buying can work even on a 3-year tour: VA loan in, then sell — or keep it as a rental in a market with steady military demand.
  • Either way, run the numbers before house-hunting leave. We'll do it with you, free.

PCSing out of Bliss?

Two things to handle: what to do with your El Paso home (sell it, or rent it out — we'll give you an honest read on both), and finding someone good at your next duty station. We maintain a network of vetted, military-friendly agents across Texas and the U.S. and will personally connect you — it costs you nothing.
